Piston engines used in aviation need a fuel that vaporizes easily and has high resistance to knocking, which is provided by aviation gasoline (avgas) or other approved spark-ignition fuels. Jet fuel is a kerosene-based fuel designed for turbine engines and has properties that make it unsuitable for spark-ignition piston engines: it’s much less volatile, its ignition and combustion characteristics don’t match what a spark-ignited piston engine needs, and it won’t light reliably or burn cleanly in that kind of engine. Using jet fuel in a typical piston engine would lead to hard starting, rough running, potential detonation, and engine damage.
